IoT forensics includes various challenges right from monitoring IoT devices to locating them, the relevance of identified evidence, jurisdiction, blurry boundaries, improper evidence handling, securing chain of custody, lack of standardization etc.īecoming one of the integral parts of our daily lives as a wide variety of IoT products has been introduced for the consumers and enterprises, internet-connected products such as a pacemaker, light bulb, refrigerator, temperature sensor, and accelerometer, enables a high degree of monitoring with the ability to control the devices remotely. IoT has created a broader platform for cybercriminals to launch numerous diverse nature attacks. When such connected devices come together, there is a vast amount of personal data generated which can be used as evidence for digital forensic investigation.

IoT devices connected today are smarter where, for example, a user can conglomerate numerous devices from a single control point. As such, preserving the security and integrity of these connected devices becomes a crucial aspect. Various characteristics of IoT are existence, sense of identity, connectivity, interactivity, dynamicity, scalability, limited computation, and limited resources like low memory.

Due to the furtherance in hardware, software and communication technologies these days majority of the devices are capable to connect to a network. IoT is a term that defines a system where various computing devices connect via a network and is capable of transmitting data wirelessly. Index Terms-Digital Forensics, Evidence Acquisition, Internet of Things, Security. Moreover, Future work is shared later in the paper along with concluding findings and discoveries. Also, comparative analysis is done among various open source/freely available digital forensics tools which can become a backbone in producing critical evidence for any crime involving IoT devices. This paper majorly focuses on the research conducted on various IoT device forensic approaches and techniques along with the tools that can apprehend -digital information. Because of their volatile memory nature and countless existence, even if an investigator finds success in extracting some knowledge it might still not be human readable. There are very few tools available in the market that can analyse IoT devices. Since the majority of these IoT devices have flash memory or low memory it is a tedious task to analyse the data generated and convert it to valuable information that could present in law court. To evaluate this and investigate the information gathered from these several IoT devices is a major task in any investigation. This meaningful communication between IoT devices gives rise to many security breaches and misconduct.
